Tips On Buying Your Next New Lawn Mower

By Allyn Paul, filed under Lawn Tips.

I talk about lawn mowing all the time. In fact, it is probably one of the top five topics I give tips about on this blog during the year. The reason I do is because of its importance in the overall health and vigor of your grass and turf.

Today, however, I am not going to talk about mowing height, sharp blades or mulch versus catch. What I want to talk about instead is the actual lawn mower you use. You see, if you have the right equipment, then you are more likely to want to use it, or in fact, enjoy using it, and that goes right to the health of the grass as you maintain a consistent cut weekly.

How To Choose A Lawn Mower

First off, I recommend you get one that can both mulch and catch the clippings. This is because there will be times when one of the options will make more sense than the other. For example, when there is leaf cover, you can catch, and when you want to recycle clippings for lawn health, you can mulch.

Next, you need to get a mower that is properly powered. An under powered mower will not cut thick grass well and either rip and shred the blades or worse, leave clumps all over the lawn.

If you find a mower that is more than 5 horsepower, you will be just fine. Anything less, and you will run into issues down the road.

Finally, make sure you have bought a mower that has a deep deck. This costs more because more steel is used, but a deeper deck will also stop clumping as the clippings remain up under the deck longer, thus being ground into smaller bits.

If you follow these three simple rules when you go out to buy your next lawn mower, I am quite confident you will enjoy the cutting process more and more each week!
