Having A Nice Lawn In 2011 – Proper Irrigation

By Allyn Paul, filed under Lawn Tips.

We have been talking the last couple weeks about making the decision to have a nice lawn in 2011. After all, a new year resolution within the lawn care realm is just super cool anyway!

In the first article, I talked about proper lawn cutting and in the second article, I gave you some fertilizing tips that are sure to boost your lawn’s health. Now we can talk about the third piece of the puzzle: lawn irrigation.

That’s right folks, you have to water the lawn if you want it to grow properly, maintain its green color and be healthy overall.

Mechanics Of Lawn Watering

If you think about it, the only times you truly need to be concerned with watering the lawn are in the summer months. I can be fairly safe in saying that later June through early September are the only months to be concerned. Outside of this window, Mother Nature should take care of the lawn watering for us.

First off, I need you to get a good sprinkler. You want one that will keep the droplets large and low to the ground. This way, less water is lost to off target areas due to wind. It’s also a good idea to get a sprinkler that will cover larger areas so you don’t have to move it as often. I always use impact sprinklers on my home lawn.

Next, I recommend you get a timer for your sprinklers so you don’t have to worry about turning them on and off. That is probably the biggest reason I find homeowners not watering properly–either they forget to turn them on, or they get too busy to do it. If you have a timer going, you can pretty much set and forget during the months I mentioned.

There are all kinds and types of lawn watering timers on the market, but I recommend those that offer a double-hose hook up. This way you can get double the coverage from one spigot.

In the next article I will talk about setting the sprinklers so the optimum amount of water is spread across the lawn for maximum health and vigor!
