Every year I get emails from people wanting to know “when should I cut my lawn for the first time in Spring?” And honestly, there is no clear cut answer to this question, but in the interest of being a nice guy and helping ya’ll out, I’ve come up with some simple ideas to help you plan.
When Magnolia Bloom, Start Mowing
When you see the magnolia trees in full bloom this spring, it is time to get out and start cutting, mowing, trimming; all of it. It has something to do with soil temps and air temps I guess, but over the last several years, I have noted that the magnolia trees were looking great as I cut my lawn for the first time.
The other cool part about this little tip is that magnolia trees grow in most the the United States, so the gauge works well for most of you guys.
If You Didn’t Clean Your Leaves, Mow NOW!
I know that some of you were not able to get your leaves cleaned up last fall, and because of that, they are packed on there still this spring. That is not good! If this is you, strap that bag on the mower and get out and cut now. Go ahead and drop the height down to around 2.5″ or the middle setting. You won’t hurt anything this early in the year. But those leaves have GOT to come up of you will be in for a world of problems later.
If You Left If Long Last Fall, Cut NOW!
Lastly, some of ya’ll didn’t take my advice and you left the lawn too long last fall. That means you need to get out early this year and give the lawn a nice little trim cut. Remove the top 1/3 of the grass blades during this lawn cutting. This acts to rejuvenate the turf and help it wake up faster when the sun hits it!
That’s it guys, get out when you are ready and start your easy lawn mowing for the season!____________________________________________________________
